Roman Shades
Roman shades are a classic. Unlike standard shades, which bunch at the top when opened, Roman shades fold or stack up evenly. As a result, they have a smooth, sleek appearance as opposed to ribbed or bumpy. Depending on the style you choose, these shades can appear elegant and traditional or relaxed and contemporary. Either way, your shades will be both stylish and functional. Roman shades can filter or completely block out the light that enters your windows, help maintain the privacy of your living space, and provide shade to a room that is typically flooded with sunlight.
Classic Beauty
Roman shades are available in a wide variety of fabrics and patterns so that you can find the ideal complement to your home’s decor. Both light and heavy fabrics can be used, though rigid fabrics may have trouble folding well. In general, you can choose between five different types of folds:
- The Flat Fold: This option has a slim profile and lacks seams, so it’s perfect if you want to avoid interrupting the pattern of a fabric. It works well for shallow windows and French doors. Keep in mind that you may need to adjust the folds after raising these shades.
- The Plain Fold: Also known as the Knife Pleat Fold, this classic option features horizontal seams that run across the fabric every few inches. Although these seams may not work well with patterned fabrics, they can make solid fabrics more visually appealing. They have a slim profile, and they remain even when the shade is raised.
- The Soft Fold: Also known as the Hobbled Fold, this style retains its soft folds when fully extended, giving it a more traditional look. This also means that it has more depth when lowered, making it a poor choice for shallow windows. Because of the additional fabric required, this style works well if you want to block out a lot of light.
- The Relaxed Fold: Also known as the European Fold, this style features a curved bottom. It works best on windows where the shade will typically remain partially raised, as it can look somewhat sloppy when completely lowered. You will likely need to adjust the folds after raising or lowering the shades.
- The Front Slat Fold: This style has horizontal tucks, which resemble slats. The tucks add dimension to the shades and can enhance the visual interest of Roman shades made from a solid-colored fabric. When raised, the slats of the shade fold over one another.
Control the Light
Using Roman shades, you can control how much light enters your room. Customization options are available, allowing you to exercise maximum light control with light-blocking fabric or blackout liners. Consider the orientation of the window, the amount of shade it receives, and how the room will be used when deciding how much light you need to block.
Form & Functionality
Roman shades are easy to hang and operate. You can choose to mount these shades inside or outside of the window frame. Plus, a variety of lift mechanisms are available. If a simple cord lock won’t cut it, you might wish to explore cordless lifts, continuous loop lifts, or even motorized lift upgrades. Raise and lower your shades with the push of a button!
