How to Clean Vinyl Windows
Vinyl windows come in an astounding array of sizes, colors, and designs. In fact, the most difficult part of cleaning yours may be figuring out how to navigate the various locks and latches. You may have to refer to your owner’s manual if you aren’t already familiar with the details of how your windows operate. But when it comes time to clean your vinyl windows, these tips will help you get the job done right the first time:
- Consider timing. Windows that dry too quickly are more likely to streak. To avoid that frustration, choose an overcast day. Plus, make sure you have all your materials handy before you begin.
- Avoid abrasives. Harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia and rough clothes or contaminated sponges can damage your windows, according to Evergreen Window Cleaning. To prevent problems, opt for gentler products like baby soap or vinegar and microfiber cloths.
- Vacuum first. Excessive amounts of stuck-on dirt can turn into an abrasive. Vacuuming the window, track, and sill first helps remove the extra grime.
- Don’t forget the screens. When washing the windows, remove the screens so that you can access the exterior more easily. Don’t forget to rinse the screens with a garden hose on a gentle setting and wipe down their frames before you replace them.
- Make a plan. Different windows offer different opportunities for access. Some flip in for easy cleaning. Some have sashes that pop in and out. Others just slide up and down. Know what is possible. Then, make a plan.
Planning a Vinyl Window Cleaning
You’ll want to adapt your plan to fit how your window works. However, it helps to have a basic path to follow:
- Gather your window cleaning tools.
- Vacuum the interior of the window to clear off any loose grime.
- Wash the window with clear water first.
- Working from left to right, wash with a gentle solution of either baby shampoo and water or vinegar and water. Work quickly. If the solution dries, you’ll have a streaky window.
- Rinse the cleaned window with fresh water. Then, dry with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Wipe the window frame with the cleaning solution. Follow by wiping with clean water. Then, dry.
- Move to the exterior of the window to repeat the process, if necessary. In many cases, rainfall will be enough to keep the exterior of windows clean. If not, a quick rinse with a garden hose on a gentle setting may be enough. Take care not to use an excessive amount of water.
